My dog is an escapist. He loves to get out of the house and run around the neighborhood. It hasn't happened in a while, since we have kept a tight reign on him and finally taught the Kid that it is NOT okay to just open the door while the dog is running loose in the house.
This morning, however, I put his leash on him and sent him outside like I usually do. Something told me to look out the window and check on him. His entire choke collar was off, and he was standing there looking up for the dogs that live above us. Why didn't he run? I calmly opened the door and called him back in. Normally, he would say "haha screw you!" and take off. Today, he just excitedly came back in and sat down with me. I pulled his leash back in, put it back on, and sent him out again. The dog seemed never the wiser about what had just occurred. I have to wonder if he knew and just didn't care to run away, or did he not even notice. Either way, he is still outside sitting in his favorite spot enjoying nature going by and I am here not having to worry about whether or not he will eat someone else's pet.
I miss having cats. This dog is big and needy. I want an animal that doesn't give a flying fig as to whether or not you love them. I can't have any cats as my 2 men are deathly allergic to them. I do have a cat nephew, though. My best friend got herself a lovely black cat (our favorite kind) to which I am now the auntie. What's really funny is how she was telling me about all the cat products she has bought him that he won't use. Instead of sleeping in any of his beds *he has one per room*, he will sleep in a box. Instead of doing #2 in the litter box, he goes to the bathtub.
Apparently, my cat nephew is a considerate cat, too. He won't get sick on the carpet, only in the kitchen on the tile. He is very good at going under things and catching the dust bunnies in his fur. She said he is a walking swiffer. I have not met him in person yet, but I know that we will get along just swimmingly. She rescued him from death row, as I did my dog. The situations were pretty similar, too. Guess my dog has to deal with having a cat for a cousin. As much as he despises cats, I can't say that he will be all too happy when I come in from meeting B with cat hair all over my legs. I will probably end up having to change in the car so I won't get the allergies going in the house OR mauled by my own mutt.
I think one needs a sense of humor to train a dog, though. I was just reading some fun filled articles about dog training. If you have questions that need to be answered, then you should definitely take a look at the Q&A section. When I saw it I though of Luna. She just got a new puppy that needs to be paper trained. There is plenty of information to be had, and a chuckle or two along the way. I appreciate humor when it comes to animals. They are like children, you have to train them the right way or suffer the consequences.
We have to retrain him for his crate, so I am especially interested in their tips on that. When it gets cold and nasty outside, we won't have the option of just letting him sit out there till we return, like we do for our short trips now. It's either the kennel around the corner or the crate in the house. When all you want is to go to the store, it's a bit much to take him to the kennel.
Do you have a pet? What kind of pet do you own, and why did you choose it?

you know i have a dog... a dog i barely like... i chose him b/c he was a nice size and looked like a good fit for our family. he still is a good fit, but i am having a hard time liking him... *sigh* oh well.
I have to vacuum at least once every day. This includes all my home furniture in the living room because it is BLACK.The dog is beige. You do the math. I am a bit tired of the dust, especially since one day NOT vacuuming makes everyone stuffy. I guess we are all a bit allergic to dog dander. The floor is covered with dog hair but it's the same color so you can't really see it. I hate that! How do YOU get the dog hair to be REALLY gone?
Have you been affected by the pet food recall? Has it changed the way you feed your pets?
I keep checking to make sure his isn't being recalled. They got pretty close. He eats Ol' Roy Lamb and Rice from Walmart. In essence, it has made me paranoid. My friend's cat passed away due to his already frail body being ravaged by the tainted food. It was so sad. I also keep a watch on him to see if he gets sick after eating the food we do give him. It's so terrible how many people have lost their pets due to this travesty.
I get a dog horoscope on my Inbox for fun every day. Sometimes they are dead on as to what the dog is dealing with, and other times not so much. It has lead me to believe that I should try out a different service for the reading. I was interested to find out through dog horoscopes that Coby *being an Aries* wants to be first all the time. It explains a lot, since his demanding behavior lead me to believe that he was just jealous. I think it's worth a more in-depth look. Anyone else do this with their pets?
I hate when it rains like the earth is trying take back New Jersey. It didn't bother me so much before I had a dog. I have to walk the dog in the pouring rain. I hate how he comes in and smells like the Green Tea & Mint shampoo I bought from a pet supplies store online mingled with the stench of wet dog. Then said dog runs all over my house, rubbing his body all over floor and shaking the wetness ALL OVER MY COUCHES >__< ....
Do any of you ever put your dog in a kennel? I'm not talking about the small crate at your house, I am talking about the kind you put the dog in when you are going away for overnights or things like that. I put my dog in a kennel on Saturday night and he came back smelling like *gasp* a dog. EW! I hate when he smells like that. I brushed him down in baking soda which neutralizes the smell and makes him stop itching so much. He was shedding more, too. I was unaware that a dog would shed in the middle of winter like this...then again I have never had an inside dog bigger than a chihuahua and that one wasn't mine.
