I have made a preliminary design for my Eagle shawl. I plan to have it finished before powwow next year. Among my list of possible materials to use for the shawl are:
- Satin
- ostrich feathers
- Sequins
- Beads
- Lace-weight Yarn
- Leather
I have it formed in my mind, but this is the hardest part. I don't want to make it too heavy because I will sweat to death with it on. I might make my son a jacket, too, but then I would have to find another lightweight material for that. *sigh* Decisions, decisions.
Does anyone know what you do with sage?
I do...
Do you know the purpose of tobacco?
I do...
Do you know the word for equality in every native language?
I do...
If you want to find out those things and more, you should definitely bookmark my new site...
Yeah, I know, like I need another blog. LOL
But it gets rid of 2 other blogs *almost* so that justifies it COMPLETELY haha
enjoy...
This is where you can read all about the things I wrote this month for National Native American Heritage Month. I did one post here for it, but have been divulging more info on my Mindsay blog.
I also have pictures in a slideshow that you can see on one of the blog entries.
I am in love with my new jacket and I will show you the picture:

I also found a huge cache of free eagle pictures which I have uploaded to my photobucket account:
Native Heritage Month began at the beginning of November, but it's a wonder that I just found out. I guess that's like not finding out that Hispanic Heritage month was September till it was half over, not to mention that Hispanic Heritage MONTH is actually only about 2 weeks long. The television doesn't really pay much attention to these things until they are nearly done and over with. It's like they don't want anyone to remember anything that is not in Black and White.
In honor of this month, I will refer you back to my own observance of my heritage as well as others on the Internet:

and I am well pleased. I cannot give you all the details of the ceremony, as it is sacred. I do have ashes from the fire where we sent offerings to our Creator. I smell like cedar smoke. It is all in my hair and clothes. I wore my feathers, my turquoise suede shirt, my black skirt and heels. I also donned my choker that I made, my medicine bag, and my turquiose ring that is shaped like a marquise diamond. My hair was in ponytails. My black shawl which my mother made for me a while ago was also across my shoulders. My mother gave me the name she thought best spoke of my character and my inner being. I nearly cried, but laughed to hide the searing emotion. There was a dead pause after my name was spoken...the weight of it bearing down on all of us present. It was said that I have a lot to live up to, but with the Creator's help, I will do it with flying colors. Oh, my son let me braid his hair into a single braid. He looked so much like his cousins that I nearly snatched the wrong kid! HAHA.
Okay I know I have been making you wait long enough to know the name that I am now free to speak and put on anything I like...take a look and tell me what you think:
Here are a few other pictures. The first is me sleepy after the ceremony and the last 2 are from before the ceremony. My little sis is next to me getting her name the same day. She also got an awesome name that evoked a collective sigh from all the attendees. My mother has a gift for naming.
