Not a letter as in a long letter to congress, but kind written with a permanent pens across the top of a workbook page. My son has just learned the power of an A as opposed to an A+ or a B. Why? Because he wanted to know. He hears all his cousins are getting A's in school, so he wanted to know why they were so excited. Of course, now I have to reassure him that no matter what letter I boldly scrawl across the top of his page, the only thing that matters is if he actually "got it", if he understood the material, and if he can use it in every day life. I am glad that the power of the letter is not holding him hostage as it once did to me.
About a week or two ago I bought a filing box for his papers. I put his papers per month in there. Then, I printed all my records for taxes and went through them to figure out who paid me what when and the totals. Now I bought two 4 subject fat notebooks *hence the tabs to the left actual picture of the notebook teehee* so I can write down daily what he does and what I do. Then I can go back and see what I have done for the day/week and make sure we stay on task. I also have a weekly calendar with which to start January. True we are unschooling, but I still have to keep good records for when/if he does go to public/charter school. He will definitely need them to get into college. Good to get into a routine of record keeping now and not have to wait till the end, scrambling to get everything he needs. That's a really bad example anyway.
As far as my crafts, I plan to get a 3 drawer plastic unit. There will be a drawer for beads, one for feathers & leather, and another for larger projects like when I start crocheting within the next week or 2.
Any other tips on how we can get things together?
I thought it would be a nice to talk about someone else's native fashions and deco this time around. You already know about my Native American heritage. Well I was looking at African heritage today in honor of African American Heritage Month. AfrikBoutik - Simplicity & Style that Counts! has some beautiful pieces. I have always admired well done sculpting and ethno-centric garb. They have hand crafted Leather purses that remind me of the medicine bags my tribe carries. They also have some beautiful clothing and necklaces. It's funny how native cultures really do relate to each other through their traditional items. There are variations of the same types of garb throughout native cultures.
What really took my breath away were the oil paintings. I wish I could paint with oils, but alas I can only paint by number. These pieces were so unique and worthy of more money than they are asking.
I am showing these to my son and using them as a basis to show him the similarities in the cultures that make up his background. It's another homeschooling lesson, but also a life lesson. We aren't all as different as we may seem.
Thanks to Ln I have just joined the homeschool group on Vox. I think the tagline is great. I won't tell you what it is. Go see for yourself.
ANYWHO I usually leave my homeschool ramblings to my son's blog, but now I have some incentive to put more about it here. YAY me
Right now we are still unschooling, which means we have no set curriculum and just go with the flow. He loves the Brighter Vision learning packets. They are a little under $18 a month. I like the books that they send for us to read together, the free gel pen for me, and the activity that they send inside. He knows when he sees the box it's more fun for him. I wish they had an affiliate program because I would be tooting their horn all over the blogosphere...I kind of am anyway because it is our main source for any set learning. If you want to check out the unit and see if it's for you, they have a free offer. That's how we got hooked. The brand new books they send are worth at least $10 each...that is the reading book and the workbooks. High quality stuff.
Okay that's my happy thought for now.
BY THE WAY we are picking up Coby this morning. A day early! I am so excited. We are leaving in a few minutes. More when I come back.
I heard him the first time he decided to spout his views about homeschooling only until 8th grade or your child would end up with all kinds of social ineptitude.
I was reading this blog on families.com about his re-visitation of the subject of unschool and homeschool.
You can see my comment on the post. I am listed as bulletz.
I am sick and tired of people who have no *real* clue yapping about things that don't have anything to do with the way they run their lives. It is just insane to me that they are so ready to put the smack down on non-traditional schooling instead of showing the bright side. You know the side I am talking about... The children who grow up to become entrepreneurs and millionaires, the ones who go to college when they are 15 and 16 and end up graduating early getting top honors in their classes, the kids who go on to become wonders in their professions. How about he get those people on his show? It will NEVER happen. All Dr. Phil wants to do is show the most extreme viewpoint so we can all see how right and rational his side of the fence really is.
Note to Dr. Phil: You aren't God. Get over yourself.
HEY all!! I have a post that is going to be featured in the Carnival of Homeschool. This week it is hosted by Sprittibee. This all goes down today *Tuesday* So make sure you check it out and see if you can find my blog post!
I think I will start a WTF moment corner just for you all here at Vox...Today's WTF moment is brought to you by the movie called Jesus Camp....
Who's The Fool?
Who is the person who came up with this concept, and why are they determined to undermine the truth of Christianity with it?
Another knife into Christianity and Christian homeschooling.

I have recently updated and integrated my child, Little Taz's blog into his own wordpress. I made everything graphical from scratch there and I would like for you to take a look and tell me what you think. It's nearly done. Just the tweaking and plugins left to mess with.
I homeschool my son but in an unschooling fashion. He leads me in what to teach him...and he learns a lot. I just have to get him more into conversational Spanish somehow. We are going to Puerto Rico in the spring and I want to make sure he knows at least basics. He does know some phrases and words, but not enough to hold a conversation. He is actually more interested in sign language and knows about half of the characters for the alphabet.
We use Rod and Staff books and Brighter Vision when he is in the mood. What do you all use?
His homeschool blog is here...for now.
